The hell of pregnancy tests
by Liza Sabater

Eat Your Vegetables: Big Hugs to Sharyn, the Little Man, and the Husband

If this is your first baby and you are going to an OB/GYN, it is their job to make you feel like you are going crazy. The original intent of this blog was to bring our experiences with living off the beaten track after the track beat us down. Mark and I have chosen alternatives way of childbirth, education, medicine, even work because following the mainstream has brought more pain than normalcy in our lives. So on the topic of childbirth, I wrote this earlier this year : a very personal reason for not closing the Elizabeth Seaton Child bearing Center.

I have many friends who are either in the first stages of pregnancy or almost ready to give birth and I keep forgetting to expand on this post because our experience needs to be shared with the world. I promise to start posting more to Pregnant Pauses.

I was told that our first son had a high probability of being born with Down Syndrome. This was based on a test, the Alpha-Feto Protein test, which is NOTORIOUS for producing a high rate of false posotives. No matter that. This was an OB/Gyn worried with liability and from that horrid test on my pregnancy was labeled as high risk and, at 5 months, already slated by the doctor and her staff for cesarean delivery.

Up to having kids I almost never went to doctors. My experience with them had been really limited and quite frankly, it showed in the way I handled that first pregnancy. I should have listened to my intuition and walked out of that practice and straight into the Elizabeth Seton Childbirthing Center. I thought at 5 months it was too late. Well, it's not.

If there is anything that you feel uncomfortable with your doctor, to the point of not trusting them, walk out. Go elsewhere. The power of suggestion gets heightened during pregnancy. If you have any little itty bitty of doubt on what your doctors are doing it will affect your delivery.

Which is why I also practiced yoga through my second pregnancy. I ohmed for 20 hours straight during Aidan's delivery. The vibration of the ohming helped me relax and actually kept me clear and focused. Once I would stop it was like I was sucked by a vortex of pain.

Don't get sucked in by the vortex of pain that comes from pregnancy, childbirth and parenting. If in doubt OHM SHANTI.

Namaste
