NYC Bloggers Update : The Skullfucking Conspiracy
by Liza Sabater

It is a good thing to wake up in the morning and know that Jen has done a lot of the work for us. With her Gothamist: NY Bloggers Thank You post, there is a gaggle of trackbacks and links that I just culled and slapped like a beeOtch in this here blog. Then there is Ari at EverythingNY for blogging the event live and, gasp!, in great detail : EverythingNY: NYBloggers Technology Panel; EverythingNY: NYBloggers Editors Panel ; EverythingNY: NYBloggers Publishers Panel. Don't you just love bloggers?

These events are actually turning to be quite fun and Jake of Bluejake, should be credited with pulling these off. Now if we could have just one panel for the whole two hours, and maybe another one on desing, RSS and even of foreign language, sex, art, tech, culture, "you-name-it" bloggers (hint, hint Jake), it would be all great fun.

My favorite moments? I actually liked seeing the two faces of enterpreneurs with Nick Denton and Jason Calacanis . I am as split about them as lot of the people in the following links. I like Jason's enthusiasm but feel like Nick's business model is more sensible. Then again, Jason has a hunger and passion for what he does that at least makes you stop and think about the possibilities of weblogging as a business : With his vision of 500 blogs in 4 years, he believes he can turn Weblogs Inc. into the rival of About.com. My feeling though is that as with anything having to do with the Internet, there is no either/or formula; just a lot of trial and error.

Which takes us to the skullfucking conspiracy. Gawker lost advertiser after Choire published Ryan Seacrest Needs a Good Skull-Fucking. Needless to say, nor only did we find the catch phrase of the evening, but the elephant in the middle of the room was "Will bloggers sell out to the man?" For somebody so eager to make millions with blogs, Calcanis is not as eager to sell-out to ... hmmmmm .... porno as Denton supposedly has (Best line of the night came from Calcanis : "I'm not saying you're a pornographer even though you have a porn site." Meowww!)

Still there is a lot of excitement. Blogs have not arrived yet, they are just being born as a social phenomena. Meg Hourihan's tour of duty has come to an end at Kinja, the weblog guide and her eyes are on using the technology of blogs as educational tools for kids. At the other end of the social spectrum, Gawker Media is launching today DeFamer a Hollywood industry blog.

All in all, a good skull-fucking was had by all.

Loved JC's porn retort too....I thought he was cute in a Ricky Shroder-esque way. In fact, most of the bloggers look better in person. Felix's photo in the event ad did no justice to him! It was nice talking to you at the Merc. I'll let you know when my Boriqua ass gets my blog up.

C'mon baby, don't be shy
