The comment spam problem is getting out of control
by Liza Sabater
Will no one rid me of this troublesome spam? @ Radio Free Blogistan
Christian is looking for an intern just to get rid of spam. I've been battling the bots now for about two weeks and the fight is as gruesome as the Battle of Helms Deep. I have had to do the unthinkable --I've started to ban the use of certain WORDS from my site.
I hate the fact that I've had to blacklist the use of certain words in my site until I find a way to fight the bot that comes in every night to sully my blog. Especially given my free-speech and open culture politics. But it was getting out of control. On average, 150 comments were posted DAILY on this site by a smut company that promotes, amongst other things :
- be.stia.lity
- in#ce&st
- r*a$pe
Take out the symbols and you will find the words. I've had to resort to that so that my site won't get scanned for those words. It's not the links to smut I mind. It's the links to that kind of smut.

The following blogs make reference to this post :
Say it loud, say it proud!
Get MT-Blacklist (http://www.jayallen.org/comment_spam/). That will help you take control of spam comments and at least it will make it easier to delete the comments.
Also, upgrading to a more recent version of MovableType will give you redirected links in comments. That will at least defeat the purpose of comment spam, which is to gain a better google page rank thanks to your site. MT 2.661 is no longer available for download but I have a copy, so I'm willing to break a bunch of intellectual property laws if you want to have it.

Hola Sebastian,
I already have the plug-in. The people after this spamming are quite good. No trace of the bots on my server stats. With lots of different IPs and an eternal array of not just email addresses but domain names as well. All the domains shared those three words. That's why I banned them.
I'll absolutely take you up on the newer version of MT. That might help. Still, what I don't want is my blog given those sons of bitches any ranking at all. So as long as I have not one speck of their hideous links, I'll be happy.
Gracias.
