I believe that whoever wrote this article is understandibly frustrated. I myself can see where she is coming from. I have lived in Puerto Rico and was born and raised there and have noticed a great difference in the Boricuas de la isla and the Boricuas raised here. The main difference is that Puerto Ricans from the island or ones fresh off the boat do not need to brag about their identity because they are secure and proud of what they are. They range from white to black to brown and some even have chinese heritage, but despite those big differences they have no racism down there because we are all Boricua. Ricans up here drop their jaws as soon as they find out that my uncle is Puerto Rican since he looks like a straight up African or that my cousin is Rican because he looks like a straight up Russian! They think we are all brown! Ricans up here in the states tend to loose their culture, and many times it's not their fault, due to many family generations already living in America. It makes me really mad when all Boricuas here talk about is 50 cent, Jay-Z, etc and they don't even know what is bomba, plena, rumba, holandes, oriza, guaguanco, aguinaldo, trovador, cuatro, not even salsa at times! and many other Puerto Rican national symbols. I know some White-Americans that know more than Ricans themselves about our culture. Boricuas over here don't even bother to speak at least a little spanish while Americans from the states yearn to learn the language so they can study in the University of Puerto Rico because of it's outstanding educational programs, and trust me I know alot. I understand that having any kind of national day parade is nice and something to be proud of and to unite, but when it becomes about getting drunk, making a fool of yourself and making our nation look bad then it is degrading. If you want people to respect you as a Puerto Rican you must not only respect them, but also respect yourself.

Every year American tax payers pay $17 billion dollars a year to Puerto Rico in Social Services alone (Government housing, Food Stamps, College Tuition, etc). I have a hard time sending my tax money to an island that constantly votes against becoming an American State. Now before all you Boricuas start calling me a racist and telling me how great your island is let me display some facts. 40-50% of Puerto Rico's inhabitants are on some type of welfare program (caserios or food stamps)in the United States they enjoy full Welfare benefits, 70% of their housing is payed for by our American tax money and there is a 25% unemployment rate (check www.calnews.com/archives/ctn031498cust.htm for stat verification.) Also, Puerto Ricans do not pay Federal Taxes. This means that the United States is getting back very little in to what we are putting into Puerto Rico.
What does the United States get back in return for all of our tax money and services? Well, we did have a Marine base in Puerto Rico (Vieques) but was lost due to numerous angry Puerto Rican protestors claiming that is was a symbol of American imperialism. Many of the Puerto Ricans burned American flags during their protests. We do have a few Puerto Ricans who serve in our arm forces (if you ask a Rican he will tell you that 90% of our Arm Forces consist of Puerto Ricans).
I personally feel that the United States should pull out of Puerto Rico politically, financially and millitarily. The only American presence they want in Puerto Rico is our tax money. Let them become independent and work for their own well being. We (the United States) are not doing them any favors by giving them free hand outs.
I lived in Puerto Rico as an exchange student from 2000-2001. I found the people to be lazy, rude, ignorant and Anti-American. Thats fine if they want to behave this way but don't have your greedy little hands out for my tax money.

They should rename the PR Parade to "The Rikers Island Go-to-a-Parade Day Release Program" 'cause I've seen nothing but criminal behavior every time they bring that stupid shit into my neighborhood. Why not put that damn parade on Lex above 110th St? Why do they have to run that insanity up through the Upper East Side? Do like I do -- mark your calendars for the 2nd Sunday of June every year to plan a vacation and get the hell out of town for that weekend. The whole weekend. No fuss, no muss and best of all... no fat woman stuffed into spandex thinkin' they all look like J-Lo (it's more like Jell-O. Don't you get it? YOU LOOK STUPID!). This so-called "parade" (or should I say, "Hey-look-we-got-a-whole-day-to-get-drunk-harass-women-and-act-like-we're-cool-but-really-the-whole-city-is-laughing-at-us excuse for a Parade") is a goddammed nightmare and any sane person would run like hell to get away from it. The only reason they don't outlaw it is because it would piss off a large group of voters (at least those who can read). What a horror show.

I lived in Puerto Rico for 6 months as an American exchange student (even though PR is also an American territory) and I must say that Puerto Rico sucks. I was ready to leave that forsaken island after my 6th day there.
The PR people were so lazy and incompetent that I actually felt that I was being followed around by Candid Camera. I learned that the best way to keep a Puerto Rican away from you is by offering him/her a job. They hate to work. It seemed like every other day was some kind of a Nationalistic Puerto Rican Holiday to avoid an honest day's work. They even had national holidays when Puerto Rican boxer Tito Trinidad won his fights. I can't tell you how many times I starved because all the PR restaraunts were closed for the famous Tito Trinidad holiday.
The worst part about Puerto Ricans are their ghetto, classless , childlike behavior. The slightest little comment or incident is enough to set the whole island into a massive riot. The elderly in PR were not much brighter than their younger conterparts. Many 40 year old and 50 year old people behaved like small children. They would constantly whine and cry as if they were on a Jerry Springer show when things didnt go there way. Many of these Old people listen to Reggeaton (horrible music) which is actually music targeted for teenagers and ghetto stragglers.
Another great part I love about these people is their unique ability to totally destroy the Englsih language. Go to any Puerto Rican chat room and observe how full grown adults write English in ghetto slang or ebonics. "We beez Boricuas fo life so holla". Im assuming in Puerto Rico the public education system is using "Hooked on Ebonics" instead of "Hooked on Phonics" to teach English. If Ricans speant more time reading an English book than they do breakdancing to Reggeaton they might actually learn how to speak proper English.
I do have a suggestion though. If we make Puerto Rico independent from the United States and we stop giving them their welfare , we will see a new and improved attitude from the people. The PR people will change their arrogant, obnoxious and uneducated ways towards becoming a lot more respective towards Americans.
If you Puerto Ricans really want to improve yourselves (which im sure you probaly dont) you can start by educating your one dimensional minds, getting a job , respecting the United States and keeping your huge ghetto traps shut.
