The Believer - In the Penthouse of the Ivory Tower
And this article describes to the T why I walked out of a PhD in neobaroque aesthetics in Latin American contemporary literature : The subject, at least as it has to be "disserted", "conferenced" and "papered" seemed more like an exercise in intellectual onanism than an actual cultural contribution. Academia takes magic and genius out of the enjoyment of literature and the pursuit of knowledge. What is most sad is that these days, the Humanities have little relevance to creative and cultural production. Studying PERL is more relevant to cultural production than, as Gideon Lewis-Kraus says, "studying metaphors of hydrophilia in medieval Ukrainian folk ballads".
