La sabiduría tradicional dice que los nuevos electores votan contra lo establecido y así sucedió en España de forma muy dramática el pasado marzo. Algo semejante ha podido suceder en Estados Unidos como muestra de rechazo a un presidente tan polarizador como Bush.
Sin embargo, el fantasma del terrorismo y el grito guerrero y ultramoral del presidente quizás hayan sido capaces de lanzar a la calle a unos ciudadanos que creen en verdadero peligro a su país.
En principio, los nuevos registrados demócratas superaban en una proporción de casi 3 a 1 a los republicanos. Esto sería favorable a Kerry y confirmaría la nueva regla de «No enfades demasiado al abstencionista rival, que igual vota».
Pero siempre es complicado saber qué es más fuerte, si el miedo o el deseo de cambio. Y esa era la elección.

Traditional wisdom says that the new voters vote against the status-quo, and that's what happened in Spain of a very dramatic way this past March. Something similar to a show of repudiation could have happened in the United States with a such a polarizing president as Bush.
But the ghost of terrorism and the President's ultramoral war-cry have been able to send to the street to citizens who truly believe their country is in danger.
In principle, new registered Democrats outnumbered Republicans 3 to 1. This would have been favorable to Kerry and would have confirmed the new rule of "you do not upset too much to the rival undecided because they still vote".
But its always complicated to know what is stronger : fear or desire for change. And that was the choice.
