The Book of Leviticus According To St. Ricardito: Maintaining Election: The 8,340,203rd Blogger Weighs in on the 2004 Vote.
This is just a snippet from a long yet brilliant post. Go read the whole damn thing. He's just laid it down like a true boricua.
Some of y'all don't believe me when I tell you my mantra: "When you think it can't get worse, it's worse than you can imagine." This is pessimism at its finest, but it also keeps me from being surprised and/or disappointed. So as you sit there and realize what a mess this country is, you need to keep in mind a couple of other things as well:
-Puerto Rico is still a colony. The countries of Latin America and Africa are still highly stratified and are run by corrupt regimes. The effects of neo-colonialism are palpable, but things would have stayed that way under Kerry.
-The United States maintains a Cold War military posture, stationing troops full-time all over the world; and it maintains the first truly global economic hegemony in world history. In other words, ever since the fall of the Soviets, what we say goes. And the problem is, in order to maintain a stable world economy at status quo (with poorer producer states servicing wealthier client states), it HAS to remain this way. That would not have changed with Kerry either.
-In order to pacify Iraq to fit U.S. policy interests, thousands upon thousands of people will have to die. Our interests in Iraq would not have changed with Kerry.
-In other words. We're not fucked, people. We've BEEN fucked. For a long time now. We should be working to unfuck ourselves, but a little perspective goes a long way.
The good thing is that elections like this serve to underscore the fact that the American political mindset is too rigid and needs new ideas desperately. So, okay. So let's do it. Yes, sometimes we enter periods in our history where injustice runs rampant. Once, we even went to war with each other. But it is important to keep in mind that frustrations like the ones we are feeling also led to things like the New Deal and the Civil Rights era. And people…there are still over 200 non-Republicans in the House of Representatives. There are still over 40 non-GOP in the Senate. Kerry didn't lose in a landslide. He's not Mondale or McGovern. Christ people, can we all calm the fuck down over here? Just a tad?
