Post-Election Notes From the Blogosphere : Jo Miller of Hiding in Plain Sight
by Liza Sabater
Hiding In Plain Sight: ANNOUNCEMENT: I am a big scary lesbian! Booga booga booga!
OK, so I'm the world's worst lesbian, since I only sleep with men and I have never been able to muster an attraction to women, try as I might. But if I have to live under the rule of hatemongers swept into office on a tide of ignorant homophobia, if a backass and bigoted majority has declared war on my friends and loved ones, then goddammit, I'm ready to fuck a woman on the steps of the Capitol. Preferably at the feet of Hatemeister Rick can't-keep-his-mind-off-anuses Santorum.
I say we all come out of the closet, whether we're gay or not. If everyone's gay, the reactionaries won't know whom to hate (they're not so good at multitasking or counting to numbers higher than ten). SAY IT LOUD, I'M GAY AND I'M PROUD! And I won't marry until everyone can.
[...]
Look, you Newsom-bashing dolts, we didn't lose by supporting gay rights--we DIDN'T support gay rights. Quaking with fear before the homophobic christers, our party cowered, scuttled to the mushy middle, and mumbled some disgraceful twaddle about civil unions. We espoused a separate-but-equal non-solution that pleased no one. Nice going, Shrum.
When will the party leaders get it through their heads? People didn't love Clinton because he ran to the middle, but because he happened to have a near-miraculous human touch. Swing voters don't reject us because we're insufficiently homophobic, but because we lack the courage of our convictions. Whenever fighting for our beliefs might offend or scare the famlee-values brigade, we pussy out. And pussies trigger an automatic contempt that's been hard-wired into the species by millions of years of evolution.
It begs to be repeated over and over again. Those who believe the Democrats are to the left of the Republicans must have inhaled and inhaled deeply. Democrats have been playing the "Republican Lite" game for too long and they've been losing because Republican voters are humans are people are individuals who, all in all, are not stupid. A person's "bullshit detector" does not involve rational thinking. It involves "gut feeling" and a sense of déjà vu. Republican voters know a Republican politician when they see one. A Democrat in Republican's clothing? That's bullshit and that's what they'll vote against.
And I agree with Jo completely : If gay marriage is the reason why Democrats lost the election, then I'll call myself a lesbian as well and fight for our rights.
Say it loud!
Say it proud!
