Branding the new Republicans
by Liza Sabater
Since November 3rd, there's been a rush to branding of not only the Democrats but the Republicans as well. Enter Ian Welsh's request at The Blogging of the President: 2004 | Author's Query
I'd like to ask the BOP community for a little brainstorming help. I need a descriptive term for the nation the right is trying to create. Stirling has termed it "The Freeple's Republic", Oldman has called it "The New Feudalism", others have called it the "The New Theocracy" or "the Neoconomy". What I want is a simple phrase, preferably, but not necessarily with the word Republic or Nation in it, that encompasses both the idea of aristocracy and the idea of theocracy. Once I find a name I like I'm going to pound it home in a series of articles. Help appreciated, and will be acknowledged repeatedly.
What I like about this flurry of ads and 'languaging' and branding is that it's craeting a shift in a lot of the political writing that's being generated on the left. This was obvious to me when reading parody blogs like Allahpundit and The Politburo Diktat : They've got their jihadi and commie 'brands' exquisitely define. It makes for really good reading even though I find their politics way beyond irksome.
So back at BOPNews, people have been cobbling neologisms and stumbling about in their efforts. I came up with the word Confederazi, a plumbling of the Confederacy and Nazi --but it really does not serve Ian's purpose. If you go to the bottom of the comments, you will find Leslie in Ca's entry : Pharisee Nation. This is my favorite.
One of the things I want to start working on in this here blog, is in making distinctions as to what a conservative is vis-a-vis a christian fundamentalist, an evangelical, a reconstructionist, and ultimately, a dominionist. These are terms that a lot of people on the left throw as if they were interchangeable and they are not. I would never put Jerry Falwell or Bob Jones or Michael Farris in the same category as fellow christian and conservative blogger Avery Tooley or Jeremy R. Pierce of Parableman.
So Pharisee Nation is the new Dominionism, the kind of "militant post-millenial eschathology" that has given us Jesusland.
