When I am on my back, I like sex or yoga to be involved, not influenza
by Liza Sabater
I've been feeling mildly crappy since Sunday. I thought it was due to fatigue --I've been working and mommying hard during the holidays. But it was not until a couple of days ago that I started to feel the symptoms of the flu. So I immediately delved into my Boiron stash and took a few pellets of Oscillococcinum. I swear by osccillo. I have been using now for about 4 years and cannot say enough good things about it.
Actually, all I have to say about the flu shot is terrible things. I have never gotten so sick as I did after taking flu shots. So much so, I ended up having pneumonia. It was horrible.
In truth, my kids started using homeopathics before me. Our family doctor is a pediatrics specialist AND a trained homeopath. I actually knocked on Dr. Schiller's door for almost a year to get us into his practice. I am very weary of allopathic practitioners, so to have an MD who is also a homepath is just a blessing. He has been the least intrusive medical pratitioner we have ever had; so much so that I can say this is the healthies, overall, that I have ever been.
When we started at his practice he recommended several books. Yes! Everybody who becomes his patient has homework to do. He supplies everybody with a reading list and although he does not "test" you on it, he expects you to become familiar with the terminologies. It's part of his patient education and encouragement of due diligence. What doctor does that these days? He suggeste we started with Stephen Cummings and Dana Ullman's Everybody's Guide to Homeopathic Medicines: Safe and Effective Remedies for You and Your Family. Calling out the nerd in me, of course I read the damn thing --and still use it as a reference guide. I have also read George Vithoulka's Science of Homeopathy and have in hand DK's Complete Guide to Homeopathy: The Principles and Practice of Treatment.
The most important thing for me is to know I am not working against my immune system --which has been compromised for many years with allergies. I want to use healing methods that will help my body fight disease. In homeopathy it's done by creating succussions or "super-dilutions" of the substance that, once taken, mimics the symptoms of the disease. So Sepia is a super-dilution of cuttlefish ink. This substance, if taken, can mimic a lot of the syndromes related to menstruation, menopause, even labor. In the case of oscillo, it is a super-dilution of duck's liver and spinal chord (yep! I had no idea either).
So I felt mildly sick after taking some of the pellets. Was even running a mild fever. But now you got me here blogging and loving life again --within the course of 24 hours. Literally. I felt so yucky last night I went to sleep at about 9:00pm. My normal sleeping time is 2:00 am. Life is almost back to normal --but that's because I have a homeopath who is an MD and have learned how to use the remedy. Boiron, in it's zeal to sell, sell, sell, have created misleading labeling for their product. You do not have to take a whole ampule of the remedy --only a few pellet are fine. You cannot up or lower a dose by the quantity of pellets you take --you can only do so by the level of dilution. Not only that, it's really best to stop taking the remedy if after 16 hours if some of the symptoms have not subsided because you could in effect "prove" the remedy by developing the symptoms of the illness. So if after trying it twice, nothing changes, don't take it.
Homeopathy Open is a good Yahoo!Group to join. If you know French or Italian, Google Search: what is oscillococinum has some interesting stuff. Boiron being a company of the French persuassion, has an English language site that sucks. It was obviously written up by an incompetent publicist, not a homeopath.
Fun fact? You'll find on your Google search an oscillo entry at **|** ANDY'S CHEST **|**, the blog of one of the ringleaders of The WYSIWYG Talent Show. Yeah, Andy!
