Madona Latina or Why Breastfeeding in public is not indecent
by Liza Sabater
Yahoo! News - World Photos - AP
I love my people. We just don't have the same sense of shame US culture has about the body. Think about it. To us, she is just feeding her baby. To the dominionists and puritans, she is abusing her child.
The only time you see a woman's breast in this country is only when their is a wardrobe malfunction or the woman is in different states of spread eagerness. When was the last time you saw such a positive image of a semi-naked woman in this country? Never. Ever. Madonna can make a whole book about sex but when did you see her nursing her child in public? Yeah. She's a feminist alright.
In this country, nudity is always linked to sex, and not just sexiness, mind you. It's the "I am you're ho" sex that usually is suggested in magazines like Maxim and Stuff. Yeah, and meanwhile, the assholes at Parents Television Council - Because Our Children Are Watching are crowing because they got the House to vote for increasing indecency fines WHILE MAKING THE DEFINITION OF INDECENCY BROADER AND EASIER TO USE FOR ANYTHING DEEMED INDECENT BY THEM. ANYTHING!
"Cha-Ching" - House Votes to Increase Broadcast Indecency Fines"In one of the most positive and bipartisan displays of support for American families, the House has put broadcasters on notice: You are responsible for the content of your programming, and if you fail to abide by the law, you will be severely punished. The only way these corporate broadcasting giants are ever going to abide by the law is if they are financially motivated to do so," said L. Brent Bozell, president of the PTC.
"In an effort to create public opposition to this legislation, broadcasters have resorted to absurd tactics such as pixilating an animated baby's bottom to illustrate their ‘uncertainty' about what they can air. We congratulate the Congress for seeing through this smoke screen. The indecent content that's in question here is not about a cartoon character's backside, but rather about showing rapes of young girls, teen orgies, masturbation, pedophilia, anal and oral sex. Tell me one community in America that finds that explicit content between 6 am and 10 pm acceptable, especially with children in the audience.
"We call on the Senate to act as quickly to pass Sen. Brownback's indecency legislation."
I wonder if the icky Katherine McKinnon is behind shit like this. It does not look like it (although they do not list consultants, right?) but here are the people helping define indecency in this country : Parents Television Council Celebrity Advisory Board. Steve Allen, how could you!

Say it loud, say it proud!
I breast fed in public all the time. Used to walk up and down the grocery aisles with a daughter nursing while I put things in the cart. Multi-tasking.
My worst experience?
I was in the National Art Gallery in DC. It was about 100 degrees outside and humid. I had stripped my daughter down to her diaper so as we walked around the museum she could cool off. I was also nursing her to get her re-hydrated. I was approached by a guard.
"You can't do that in here," he said.
"Excuse me? I'm breast-feeding my child."
"I KNOW what you're doing. But you can't do that in here. That child needs to have a tee-shirt on--you must wear a shirt."
So, I had to put a tee-shirt on an infant. I did. And went right back to breast-feeding.
Add it to another act of the personal as political--using your breasts as nature intended them.

I titfed my kids in public all the time. With Thing#1, it was the only thing I could do to keep him from screaming all the time --he spent 18 months with colic until we figured out he had allergies and then another 18 more months of semi-colic bouts until we were successful in managing his health.
One such time I was walking down 1st avenue with him. He had screamed all througout the night and I was ready to kill myself. The only two things that marginally kept him quiet were walking and the tit. So I decided to combine them both. I slinged the Baby Bjorn, open my shirt and stuffed his face with the tit while walking. That did the trick. Sure, I was exhausted afterwards, but at least made him stop crying for about 4-5 hours afterwards.
Hence my love for pacifiers. I just broke down and got one soon thereafter.
Then there's my blanquito son. He may be an olive complected mothaf0cker, but he sure looks white next to me. He looked even whiter as a baby. Rosy cheeks and everything. So you can imagine the look on people's faces when this black woman would whip out a tit to feed the white baby she was holding.
Yes, I was asked several times if I was a wet nurse. And people still have the audacity to ask me why I get so mad when I talk about race.

There is a lawyer in California trying to make topless sunbathing legal at all the beaches. She says it is a matter of equal rights since men can go topless. In New York state, as well as all of Canada it has been legal for quite a while. Of course Miami has topless everywhere and the famous nude beach which gets visitor from all over the world. It's not about sax and it won't destroy society so the rest of the country should get over their silly hangups and not worry. In Europe of course this is common in every country and they are doing better socially than ever before with the EU forming and getting closer to reality.

Why are European beaches topless and nudity is widely accepted there too? Because Europeans are never taught to be ashamed of their bodies, they learn from an early age that a nude body is no big deal. They have less of a problem with perversion because the mystery of a naked breast for example doesn't titilate them like it does an American. You see naked breasts on tv commercials, newspapers, beaches, parks, etc. and nobody freaks out. Here in the US we have databases of sex offenders, people who were driven to perversion by the sexual repression we still have in our society. Thus in Europe the Janet Jackson episode was quite amusing to them, and to us it was the event of 2004. We have made progress, the bikini would have been unthinkable 100 years ago here. Europe began the tradition of topless sunbathing about 50 years ago, their society is becoming unified and peaceful for the first time ever. They are making tremendous progress. Seeing the breast will not cause society to decay and fall apart, quite the opposite seems to be true. I truly believe sex crimes and sexual frustration in general in the US would go down if we began to do this. We will get there and if California leads the way all the country will soon be safe for women to enjoy their freedom and equality at the beach and we'll be better off for it.

While I go nude camping all time, I am against topless and clothes optional beaches as they leave open room for qawkers and stalkers. Make the beaches nude or clothed - not any place in between.

Right on!! Love that pic. On one hand seeing it makes me think, well why the heck do I stay so covered up while nursing in public?
But then I realize that to expose that much breast in America would be perpetuating the *Myth* that breastfeeding is perverted.

"to expose that much breast in America would be perpetuating the *Myth* that breastfeeders are perverts"
Don't buy into that baloney. NIP the way you need to. The upcoming generation will benefit from seeing the contrast between the cultural myths about breasts and the actual real life act of breastfeeding. The generations that are conditioned to oppose it don't matter, your baby is the priority. It's not your responsibility to try to relieve someone elses discomfort. Would they be responsible to put a towel over their head if you didn't like the way they chewed with their mouth open? You wouldn't even think to ask - you'd just stop looking. Don't subscribe to anti-nip pressure by letting what they think affect your actions.

love this photo! This country spends 10 billion dollars on the p0rn industry but are surprised to see breasts used for their intended purpose. Moms, don't be ashamed: there is no better way to feed your baby. Cover up to make yourself feel comfortable- don't do it for anyone else.

I agree! Americans are sex obsessed. In the 50's, medical science taughted that breast feeding was not as healthy as formula and an industry grew from this. Then the whole issue became one of class, those who could afford formula used it and it became part of middle class expecations. Right around the same time, you saw the female body made into commodity. So there is more than sex negativity seen here, there is also economic interest.
But please don't bring Catherine MacKinnon into this. She challenges the intitutions that perpetuate the subordination of women. Read her work!

Catherine Mackinnon is a feminist goddess and you'd do wise to give her the props she deserves. The woman argued for the creation of the first sexual harassment laws in the USA and was the lawyer who got rape officially considered a war crime by the International Criminal Court in 1999.
Dissing the most constructive national and international feminist lawmaker in the history of ever makes you look like an unread and undereducated doofus.
