The best recap so far about the Terri Schiavo congressional circus
by Liza Sabater
Daily Kos :: Today's Bateman cartoon: Schiavo & GOP's culture o'life
Cartoon Transcript : The recent bankruptcy bill that Bush supports will make it nearly impossible for families that suffer a major illness or injury like Terry Schiavo's to ever get back on their feet. This is a pet issue of the big health companies that give Bush and the Republicans a lot of money.The tort reform that the president wants would put and end to malpractice claims like the one that's paid for Terry Shiavo's care all these years. Tort reform, of course, is a pet issue of big corporations who want to do anything they like, including harming ordinary Americans. These companies overwhelmingly support Bush and the Republicans.
And when he was governor of Texas, Bush himself signed a law that gives hospitals the right to remove life support if the patient can't pay and there's no hope for survival, no matter what the family might wish --a law that was used recently as March 16 to unplug a baby against his mother's wishes. Essentially, by signing the law, Bush killed that baby so that hospitals can make more money.
So when the President and the Republicans in Washington talk about a "culture of life", They mean, "only when it doesn't interfere with the big companies that give us lots of money."
The best summary of what Bush defines as, not only "the culture of life" but that bogus moniker "compassionate conservatism".
