Cupcakes and Quick Bits
by Liza Sabater

aidan_bday_2005.jpg
Today is a cupcake day : My son Aidan, aka "Thing 2" turns five. So it's official ladies and germs, I have no babies anymore.

Snif.

We are making a chocolate cake and cupcakes because "they are the bestest". Then off to soccer and then maybe to the bowling alley. Then, once back home, decorated will be the cake with sprinkly things and whatnots and much sugar joy will be had by all.

Which means, blogging will be slow during the day. Tonight though, I will be coming back with my report about one of the kazillions of "Blogs and Journalism" panels and conferences asking the question : will blogs take over the world? This one was hosted at Reuters in their swanky Times Squares digs.

I read about the Reuters "Blogs and Journalism" panel at Media Drop and by the looks of it, only "industry" people were there. I probably was the only blogger there not affiliated to a corporate media outlet. So, of course, I have a whole other take on this "will blogs take over the world and how can we stop them" hysteria.

The short answer? Yes, they will take over the world. Will they do away with Reuters, AP, et al? No, they won't.

The infrastructrure that has made blogging possible is part of a whole technological trend happening in the back alleys of corporate media for 20 years. This is a trend that is much larger and complex than the idea of "blogs" and it has already changed the "product development" and monitizing structure of media outlets like Reuters.

Stopping blogs would be like trying to stop a tsunami. They're just a drop in the bucket of a technological tidal wave that is changing companies like Reuters from the inside out. And you don't have to take my word for it : Ask their journalists' union.

I will definitely be coming back to this. Right now I have a 5 year old badgering me about the lack of chocolate cupcake baking.

Ta ta.
