I will be speaking this Sunday about blogs and journalism at the New School
by Liza Sabater

NYC Grassroots Media Coalition

Redefining Journalism

Rinku Sen, Colorlines magazine; Micah Sifry, blogger and former Nation editor; Hugh Hamilton, Talk Back!, WBAI; Liza Sabater, Culture Kitchen; Abby Scher (chair), Independent Press Association-New York

Mainstream journalism often discounts the work of independent journalists who ground their activist reporting in goals of fairness, not “objectivity.” But now even mainstream journalists are beginning to question the goal of objectivity, even as ‘zines and blogs offer minute-by-minute news reported by individuals without the assurance of an editorial filter and strict journalistic standards. This panel will explore the state of the old “objectivity” v. “fairness” debate, and whether these new forms threaten the legitimacy of independent media. If so, what is the role of technology in catalyzing the buckling of this socalled legitimacy?

From their website (which, btw, should have been set up as a blog):

This coming weekend, April 9th and 10th, hundreds of concerned media makers, youth organizers and community members will be converging on the New School in Manhattan to attend over 60 workshops led by more than 100 panelists from NYC organizations. Do-it-yourself (DIY) trainings, discussions and panels, including: The Global Threat to Independent Press, Culture Jam 101, Radiolab, Hip-Hop is Political Everything Is, Video Activism, People Speaking for Themselves: Community Organizations Taking Control of Media, Policy for the People: Threats and Opportunities for Community Media and Internet in NY, How to talk to mainstream media and many more. For a complete schedule scroll to the end of this email and read workshop descriptions on our website at www.nycgrassrootsmedia.org.
