The "L" Word : Why do yo think people spread rumors about Hillary being a lesbian?

Once in a while I get interviewed by the great people of Campoy en su punto, con Concha García Campoy | PUNTO RADIO; a talk radio from Spain.
So they want to know what the blogs are talking about Hillary :
(1) Is Hillary running for President? If she is, should she? Does she have support from the grassroots?
(2) Why, oh why, the allegations that Hillary is a lesbian? They wanted to know if this was new but I have been hearing about these allegations as far back as 1990, when I worked briefly on a bio about her.
OK, now talk amongst yourselves.

Say it loud, say it proud!
Why? Because Republicans fear and hate her.
Lesbian? Mainly because such lables play well in rural areas where Republicans are influential, and hatred of things "different" is deep and powerful.

Just the heartland? I honestly think that it is in Washington itself that you find the hypocrisy. I don't think the regular joe or jane doe cares who she sleeps with. But the US is a culture founded on the sludge of Puritanism (sorry puritans, but I think your values are crap).
How did we get to this point though? How did we get to the point where sex and gender is a wedge issue? Is this fallout of the queer movement, women's lib movement, the civil rights movement or does it go way back in history?
Or is this like grabbing onto the strongest bit of privacy you can find in a public servant's life and smash it to pieces?

because anytime any woman is brilliant, powerful, capable, opinionated, and so forth... she MUST be a lesbian. because no god-fearing, man-fucking, respectable woman would ever go and get all uppity unless she sleeps with her own kind. vulgar, yes. but i fear that it must be the way some folks see things. and it makes me sick. not only is it slanderous to gay women, it is beyond insulting to ALL women. just my little observation, as i have had to listen to that bullshit about hillary for too many years now.

Well, speaking as a lesbian, OF COURSE we are all brilliant, powerful, capable, opinionated, etc ;)
But all joking aside, I think Annie is on to it. If this were just a accusation with no basis then it wouldn't even be a subject we would discuss aside from being a "hey, larry, come look at this!".
However, when I imply there is a basis I am not saying that there is a basis in reality for the actual rumours of Hillary being a lesbian. What I am saying is that gender-atypical behaviour (such as being brilliant, powerful, capable, opinionated, and so forth, as opposed to meek and home/child-bound) then amongst a lot of the electorate there is a leap to assumptions of sexuality-atypical, or the hint of such.
It's a classic example of how sexuality and gender are still intertwined in our culture.
