ACTION ALERT! Preemptive Response to the Supreme Justice War
by Liza Sabater
AMERICAblog: Because a great nation deserves the truth
The upcoming nomination to replace Justice O'Connor will have a life-long impact on the course of our country. Over these last years, Justice O'Connor has been the tie-breaking vote in a number of critical cases, in many cases staving off a significant pull to the Radical Right by justices like Scalia and Thomas. Her departure represents the loss of a significant check against the Radical Right's completion in taking over the third and final branch of government. So what does that mean to the average American? You need look no further than any of Justice Scalia's dissenting opinions. As the ideological heart of the Right on the Court, his opinions represent where the Court will head if O'Connor's moderate voice is replaced with another minion like Thomas.
For that reason, it's important we act now. There are rapid response action alerts all over the place, some of them already compiled at DailyKos.
Daily Kos: Supreme Court: What You Can Do RIGHT NOW
Whatever happens with the Supreme Court nomination battle that is about to ensue, it's going to happen fast. Here are some things you can do right now:
- If you have a cell phone, sign up for People at the American Way's Mass Immediate Response site. This way, you'll be able to receive text message action items instantly as events break. (If you signed up during the nuclear option fight, you'll need to re-sign up.)
- Also sign up with the Save the Court, another PFAW website devoted specifically to this issue.
- Recruit friends and family members to the cause.
- Write to the President, telling him he should choose a consensus candidate to replace O'Connor.
- Contact your Senators to tell them the same thing.
Update [2005-7-1 11:33:32 by DavidNYC]: If you have a blog, please post these action items on your site. If you don't, e-mail them to your like-minded buddies and relatives.
Needless to say, the blogosphere is all abuzz with O'Connors decision. Check out Pam's collection of Freeperana already accumulating about the subject. Bitch is telling us to buy The Story of Jane : The Legendary Underground Feminist Abortion Service as a primer and, well, who am I to question her judgement. Also, you need to check out Shakespeare's Sister : And she has already started doing some of the research on potential candidates to the seat.
What other good information have you seen out there? Or do you have any action ideas? Let's get the ball rolling feminists. This will be our war.
(For people in NYC, click on the book's image and order through Barnes & Noble. If you order from B&N you will get it the same day or following morning.)
