Girls R Dumb
by Lorraine Berry
Governor Amphibole (I think Pataki is an equivocating rock-for-brains so the term fits) has thrown away bipartisan support for the right to privacy in the state of New York in order to further his plans to run for President in 2008. (This ambition coming from a man who has withdrawn from next year's gubernatorial campaign because he was going to get his ass kicked.)
Who did he sacrifice on the altar of his ambition? Hmmm. Let me guess. Could it be ... women? Why yes. Women. 51 percent of the population, but apparently, according to a huge swathe of the Republican party, only representative of 10 percent of the brain power.
That's the conclusion I reach after seeing, again, the failure to make Plan B contraception available over the counter. You see. Women are just too fucking stupid (or is that stupid fucking?) to be given responsibility for preventing our own damn pregnancies.
The governor's excuse was that the bill contained no "common sense" provisions for minors. "Common sense" is apparently the new framing word that means "punitive and shaming." A minor who dares to have sex and then dares to ask for Plan B contraception needs to be punished. She needs to be branded as a whore and has to have her sexual history broadcast to her parents.
Adult women also don't need access to Plan B because, really? We never get to be adults in this country. We are too immature, too irresponsible, too stupid, to be trusted to make our own decisions. If we're having sex, and we're not married, we're not entitled to Plan B, abortion, or, coming soon to states near you, any type of birth control at all. Abstinence. That's what we should be practicing. And if we're married, well our job is to make babies. Lots of 'em.
Do you have any idea what it feels like to live in a culture that constantly tells you that you're too stupid to make decisions about your own body?
You know. I wanted to be articulate and write something that might change someone's mind. But instead, I'm just going to go bury my head in a pillow, scream until my throat is raw, and hope that when I wake up, I'll have magically woken up in a culture that knows that vaginas and brains are not mutually exclusive.

The following blogs make reference to this post :
Say it loud, say it proud!
No need to try and say anything intelligent about something so stupid. I've decided that men can only understand one thing, WMD's and clubs to the head.
Nice blog!

Well, I'm a man and I too think it's dumb.
Great writing, Lorraine.

Thank you for that.
These words will stay with me.
And I'll reference you, next time, I find myself in an argument for pro-choice.
