More good news from the Bay State
by Jeff Langstraat
I didn't catch this yesterday (too busy cleaning and prepping for my Birthday Party tonight), but the Massachusetts Legislature yesterday overrode Governor Willard Romney's (R-UT) veto of a bill mandating access to emergency contraception (via Atrios):
BOSTON — The state Legislature voted Thursday to override Gov. Mitt Romney´s veto of a measure that will expand access to emergency contraception. The measure, which the Republican governor vetoed in July, will require hospital emergency room doctors to offer the medication to rape victims. It also will make the medication available without a prescription.
The Senate voted unanimously 37-0 to override the veto. In the House, the vote was 139-16 to override.
Look at those numbers again: 37-0 and 139-16! Yeah, it's nice to live in a sane state.
Of course, Willard will use this to further his "red speck in a blue state" bullshit as he looks to build support for a Presidential campaign (like the Fundamentalist base is actually gonna vote for a Mormon, a cult member in their view). Fuck Willard, this is great news for the women of Massachusetts. The last couple days have made me very proud of my adopted home.
