Baylor, Not Gaylor
by Lorraine Berry

Sometimes, one is left speechless by the stupidity and ignorance displayed by supposedly educated people. I guess this qualifies as one of those incidents.

So, at Baylor, it's okay for teammates to murder one another and then have the coach attempt to cover it up, but it's not okay to drink your coffee from a cup with a quotation from Maupin.

Jesus wept. (again.)

Don't be silly. First of all, it is extremely offensive that you would make light of a person being killed. ALL life is important, not just gay people. Secondly, Why SHOULD'T a private institution, the world's largest baptist university, be allowed to choose what messages are spread from their own campus? If they do not believe that homosexuality is righteous in the eyes of God, then so be it! That is their right as a private American institution. Just like it is your right to make ignorant comments about the deaths of young men.

Yes, Jared, it is their right to be bigoted, to be so obsessed by homohatred that they will to to such silly lengths as objecting to a quote on a coffee cup. And it is our right to point out that obsessiveness and to then juxtapose that against other actions, like a university official helping to cover up murder. Just what does that say about the values of that private institution? What does it say about their priorities? It says that's a sick institution. And it's our right to point out the sickness. Indeed, it's a duty to point out that the false piety of Baylor, the Southern Baptist Convention, and the Fundamentalist Right is sick, dehumanizing, silly in its obsessions, and dangerous.

That's a silly juxtaposition and on that does not follow the actual fact pattern. No university official "covered up" the murder. Dave Bliss tried to paint the deceased as someone they were not, they did not cover it up. Additionally, Bliss was immediately fired and to say that his actions somehow represent University policy is flat dumb. Once again, I do not understand people's obsession with the decision's of private institutions.

How did I make light of the murder of a young man by his teammate? You don't think a coach who tries to have the victim painted as a drug dealer in order to not "tar" the institution is not a university official? What is a basketball coach if not a university official? I find it fascinating that Baylor seems more upset that a coffee cup is a bad influence than a general soul-searching and evaluation of its athletic department in the wake of what was revealed. Baylor managed to pin the whole thing on the coach; was there a reevaluation of the entire athletic department culture?
Also, as a Christian, can you show me the part where Jesus said "hate gay people?" 'Coz it's not in my version, so I'm trying to figure out why it's okay to hate, when Jesus pretty clearly did say that we needed to love one another.

One would hope that following the escape of Bonnie and Clyde, David Koresh and his Branch Davidians, serial killer Kenneth Allen McDuff, the Luby's mass murders in 1991, and the recent Baylor basketball drama... Waco would learn to keep their face out of the news... But guess what, WE'RE BAAAACK

Anyone ever say murder or cover-ups were ok? Last time I checked, Baylor pretty much didn't like those either. Sometimes bad things happen to good people, organizations, or even schools. Who is sounding uneducated now?

"'Coz" I can.

Yeah, that's what Baylor thinks. Coffee is more important than murder. You have proved yourself to be as ignorant as your statement.

I'm confused where you got that Baylor University is more concerned over coffee cups than murder. No administrator at Baylor ordered or requested the cups be removed. It was 2 professors that simply requested that they be removed. It was the independent company, Aramark, that made the order to remove them from the shelves. Baylor's administration, regents, nor alumni had anything to do directly with the removal of the cups.

Homohatred? So disagreeing with your lifestyle is hatred now? Wow. Being gay apparently makes one immune to all criticisms. How dare ANYONE hold a belief different than your own! Down with free choice! Down with free speech! No one has the right to disagree with homosexulity!
Jeez people, grow up. Bliss was fired, the athletic director who hired him was fired and guess what? The PRESIDENT who hired the athletic director is now gone!
You people are ignorant and filled with more hate then the KKK and Black Panthers combined.

C'mon baby, don't be shy
