Waiting for 'A History of Violence'
by Liza Sabater
I'm dying to see this movie and not just he-who-shall-not-be-named.
I mean, the casting ... THE CASTING! Viggo Mortensen (argh! I said his name), William Hurt, Ed Harris and Mario Bello in one movie? My head just spins to think about it. And under Cronenberg's direction?!? ACK! IwantIwant IneedIneed. Tickets! Now!
Heh.
I may will not catch it on opening night because most likely I will be on my way to Washington DC for the United For Peace and Justice march, Saturday 26th. I am meeting Maryscott O'Connor and a whole contingency of kossacks that are coming down the pike.
I feel there is a weird synergy between this movie, Viggo's support of Cindy Sheehan (which, btw, is not shocking), Hurricane Katrina and the march.
Yes, I did mean to say Hurricane Katrina.
It's been a long while since I stopped working as a Latin American Literature scholar and I have been known to have horrid memory. In one of the many books I read and even taught back in the days, I read a fantastic essay titled "The Violence of Poverty". I want to say it is in Pedagogy of the Oppressed by Paulo Freire but it may well have been a chapter in Clodovis and Leonardo Boff's Introducing Liberation Theology
... and I am being a bit lazy right now. I won't go scrambling in my library for a confirm --I have one of those "organic" libraries that has never been alphabetized. But I digress.
The violence of poverty. I've been through devasting hurricanes myself, but nothing like what we've seen frozen in time and pixels after Katrina. It's as if the hurricane unleashed another force, another far deadlier energy that was locked in our homes and our lives, in this amalgamation of beings we call our country, that now has left so many aimless or dead.
It makes me wonder, what is this force made of? What everyday little violences, what everyday little violations get us to where and who we are?
Can't wait to see the movie; but, I have a date with a march.
