Did you hear the one about Bill Bennett, black abortions and crime?
by Liza Sabater
Bill Bennet is the gift of bigotry exposed : He keeps regifting himself the more he makes excuses for what he said. Back in the end of September this is what Bennet said verbatim :
"Media Matters"; by Jamison Foser ... [Media Matters] | BENNETT: All right, well, I mean, I just don't know. I would not argue for the pro-life position based on this, because you don't know. I mean, it cuts both -- you know, one of the arguments in this book Freakonomics that they make is that the declining crime rate, you know, they deal with this hypothesis, that one of the reasons crime is down is that abortion is up. Well --CALLER: Well, I don't think that statistic is accurate.
BENNETT: Well, I don't think it is either, I don't think it is either, because first of all, there is just too much that you don't know. But I do know that it's true that if you wanted to reduce crime, you could -- if that were your sole purpose, you could abort every black baby in this country, and your crime rate would go down. That would be an impossible, ridiculous, and morally reprehensible thing to do, but your crime rate would go down. So these far-out, these far-reaching, extensive extrapolations are, I think, tricky.
Now he is saying he was against black abortion before he was for it and that everything is a distortion of what he really meant :
Bennett Blames Media for Stir Over Remarks - Yahoo! News | BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Former Education Secretary William Bennett on Saturday blamed the news media for distorting his remarks about aborting black babies, saying he had intended to make "a bad argument in order to put it down."Bennett, making his first public speech since the comment aired on his radio show last month, said the meaning of his remark linking the crime rate with black abortions was reversed in many news reports.
"I was putting forward a bad argument in order to put it down," Bennett said, drawing sustained applause from nearly 4,500 people attending the Bakersfield Business Conference. "They reported and emphasized only the abhorrent argument, not my shooting it down."
Media Matters has an MP3 of the to the original faux-pas here.
What is amazing about Bennet is that he has made a fortune by being the uber-educator of the conservative movement. K to 12, the company he used to work for has pushed its products aggressively to charter schools and have tried to find ways to have voucher programs fund cyberschooling at home.
If you peruse the Home Education Magazine lists at Yahoo!Groups, you'll find stories time and again of K-12 trying to pass their definition of cyber-charter schooling as homeschooling over and over again. Why? Because there is money, big money to be made. Ironic that these marketing campaigns target educational options usually sought more and more by minority parents.
On another note, can you believe there are people defending this idiot?
