Asthma and Allergy Epidemic

Among the recent anti-science, ignorant drivel from right wing Republicans was the tirade by radio talk show host Michael Savage. In the same tirade where he showed his ignorance and insensitivity towards children with autism, Savage also attacked children with asthma:

"[W]hy was there an asthma epidemic amongst minority children? Because I'll tell you why: The children got extra welfare if they were disabled, and they got extra help in school. It was a money racket. Everyone went in and was told [fake cough], 'When the nurse looks at you, you go [fake cough], "I don't know, the dust got me." ' See, everyone had asthma from the minority community."

This is just stupid. Really literally stupid, as well as mean-spirited. There is real science out there regarding the asthma epidemic and related allergy epidemic.  more this way»

More Republican Racism: Michael Savage Edition

Michael Savage is treated like a mainstream talk show host, yet he is representative of the nastiest and most racist and intolerant side of the Republican Party. Media Matters reminds us of some of his choicest, most idiotic, most intolerant comments:

Here are just a few of the other outrageous statements Savage has made that Media Matters has documented:

* On autism: "A fraud, a racket. ... I'll tell you what autism is. In 99 percent of the cases, it's a brat who hasn't been told to cut the act out. That's what autism is. What do you mean they scream and they're silent? They don't have a father around to tell them, 'Don't act like a moron. You'll get nowhere in life. Stop acting like a putz. Straighten up. Act like a man. Don't sit there crying and screaming, idiot.' "

Right Wing Rampage: Michael Savage's Ignorance and Intolerance

It really astonishes me the kind of stupid and mean-spirited crap that right wing fanatics spout on national television. I mean these guys are absolutely nuts, but they get paid for spreading ignorance and intolerance.

This comes from Media Matters:

On July 16, the No. 3 syndicated radio talk show host in the country, Michael Savage, made the following statement on autism:

"Now, you want me to tell you my opinion on autism? ... A fraud, a racket."

Savage went on to say:

Now, the illness du jour is autism. You know what autism is? I'll tell you what autism is. In 99 percent of the cases, it's a brat who hasn't been told to cut the act out. That's what autism is.

What do you mean they scream and they're silent? They don't have a father around to tell them, "Don't act like a moron. You'll get nowhere in life. Stop acting like a putz. Straighten up. Act like a man. Don't sit there crying and screaming, idiot."  more this way»

QUOTES

We are a little bit out of touch in Hollywood every once in a while ... We were the ones who talked about AIDS when it was being whispered. We talked about civil rights when it wasn't really popular ... I'm proud to be part of this Academy. I'm proud to be part of this community. I'm proud to be out of touch.
