MLK Freedom Groove

From the vaults! Rich Rich Juzwiak's awesome remixing of MLK's "Let Freedom Ring" speech titled, MLK in the house. Stick around long enough and you'll also find in the playlist MLK's actual speech, courtesy of the MLK Library.

The last day of summer

Coney Island, 1 September 2007

I think unitedstatians have a weird sense of humor. How can you explain celebrating Labor Day on the last day of Summer?

In this household we are not typical americanos by any stretch of the imagination. As good slash-puertoricans, would rather be boogie boarding in Isla Verde than fighting the crowds at Sandy Beach. So we are going to high-tail it to the park and the museum for our last day together, to have some fun.

How are you spending your 'labor' day?

I have a dream

Martin Luther King's 'I have a dream' speech remains one of the great monuments of our civilization. Historians consider it one of the Republic's seminal documents, along with the Declaration of Independence and the Gettysburg Address.

Unfortunately, Jefferson and Lincoln lived before the age of video. Luckily for us, King had cameras trained on him when he gave this speech; here it is, freshly youTubed in September of last year.

Daily Gotham has the full text of the speech, here.

Words to live by

"I am tolerant of all creeds. Yet if any sect suffered itself to be used for political objects I would meet it by political opposition. In my view church and state should be separate, not only in form, but fact. Religion and politics should not be mingled."

— -- Millard Fillmore, address during 1856 Presidential election, from Albert J. Menendez and Edd Doerr, The Great Quotations on Religious Freedom
