QUICK THOUGHT: Obama's CHANGE is bad for the Democratic Party

Earlier today I tweeted the following:

blogdiva: DUDE! Deeds hurt Deeds. The moron ran as ANTI-Obama! RT @DavidAll: RT @POStqia: Shhh Dont Tell Anyone, But Obama Hurt Deeds in Virginia (24 minutes ago from TwitterGadget)

It was a quick quip about how I don't believe Obama hurts Democrats in the way Republicans want everybody to believe. I threw that out there and Michael Turk hit back with the following:

MichaelTurk: @blogdiva This was the Deeds campaign's GOTV mailer, it barely has his name n it: http://is.gd/4RQsH (10 minutes ago from TweetDeck in reply to blogdiva)

MichaelTurk: @blogdiva This notion that he tried to distance himself from Obama is bullshit. (21 minutes ago from TweetDeck in reply to blogdiva)

MichaelTurk: @blogdiva You are smoking crack! Deeds tethered his entire campaign to Obama. I know, I sat through the commercials. (21 minutes ago from TweetDeck in reply to blogdiva)

I was going to twitter back a response but I think it merits a quick blog post with a WHAT IF: What if the problem with Obama is NOT that he is a bad politician or a so-so President? What if the problem with Obama is that he won because he sold himself as a third-party candidate? What if the problem with Obama is that he won't be able to be a truly outstanding President unless he stops playing by the Democrats rules? What if the Democratic Party and anybody who has been a willing player can't win with the "Obama Change" formula because they are the "more of the same" that needs to be wiped clean for real change to happen?

It's the end of the world as we know it

This excerpt from About That DHS Report on Right-Wing Extremism signals the end of the world:

Some bloggers, prompted by World Net Daily, are reading this as an attempt to “smear half of the country or more as kooks for criticizing the government’s handling of the economy.”

That’s ludicrous. First, this DHS assessment was begun more than a year ago, before Barack Obama was even nominated. It has absolutely nothing to do with “tea parties,” and it was not done at the behest of the Obama administration.

It's part of a pattern of posts that I've seen popped up on memeorandum that have left not scandalized but bewildered and utterly confused. I don't know what to make of titles like Horowitz Unloads on Obama Derangement Syndrome, Bush Bowed Too, Romney: Don't Wish for Obama to Fail, To Everything There is a Season and a two-parter about Glenn Beck: About Glenn Beck's Extremist Rhetoric and About Glenn Beck's Extremist Rhetoric, Part 2.

Why am I so confused? The source is Little Green Footballs.

Russian miscreants tear a new one on Lenin

Lenin's Ass

When I read this bit of news I immediately felt incredibly old. I remember the days of bomb drills and of school teachers talking about the Big Red Menace that was going to come to Puerto Rico by way of Cuba. Of course, for this girl, who grew up in a Marx-loving household with pictures of Che, Castro and Lenin strategically placed in my father's library, I was more than eager to meet one of these alleged powerful commies.

And yet, I was very much aware as well that for each kid who could read and write in Russia at the age of 6, there were Soviet dissidents everywhere incarcerated, thrown in concetration (aka work) camps or simply disappeared. Which is why I am aghast that somebody was brave enough to blast a new asshole on Lenin's statue. I mean, they bombed the thing in such a strategic way that it's still standing albeit with a huge tear in it's bum.

We've come a long way in history, indeed. From Bomb blows big hole in Lenin statue's butt - Russia- msnbc.com:

The "Finger Quotes" Moment: The Defining Difference Between the Parties

This was the moment that John McCain sealed not just his fate, but the fate of the Republican Party this year. There will be no comeback in 2008:

John McCain cedes the "health" of the mother to the Democratic Party, thus alienating women voters. But I see something deeper in this clip. It cedes "health" altogether. It admits that to the Republican party, the healthcare crisis is not of concern to them. "Health" is, to McCain and the Republican Party, so unimportant that it gets put into finger quotes. John McCain has just defined "health" as nothing but a rhetorical talking point.

On political authenticity

The quality of being genuine is hard to convey, and deciding who should be president based solely on that basis can lead to disaster; you need brains and an ability to go with the flow as well. But voters know a phony above all and Romney came off as one from the get-go. Over the last decade he had changed his views in a rightward direction on so many issues to suit what he thought he needed to win the GOP nomination that he ended up standing for nothing but his own ambition.

[...]

It's no accident that the GOP race is down to three men who are clear about who they are: McCain, Huckabee and, yes, Ron Paul.

What is it to be a true conservative, from one of their horses mouths

I got this video clip via Andrew Sullivan via Memeorandum. Two things immediately jump out of this video.

1. What the Southern Avenger says here is in line with what a lot of liberals and progressives have been saying for the last eight years : That people like George W. Bush, Karl Rove, Sean Hannity and Michelle Malkin are extremists and not conservatives at all.

2. Exactly because the argument of this video is that true conservatives are against the war, I find interesting that Andrew Sullivan doesn't waste time to call out the author a paleo-conservative. And yet, if you go to the guys' website ... paleoconservative is the last word to come to my mind.

What do you think?
