Is Big "Boys" an Anachronistic and Sexist Term?
Especially in an article that deals with efforts in which a woman is a primary player, is it appropriate to describe the milieu as "playing with the big BOYS"? I would think that part of moving into the 21st Century would be the adoption of language that reflects the new power women are achieving in American society. In the 21st Century, moving among the powerful means "playing with the big boys AND GIRLS". And it's about time!
Maybe a better metaphor would be "playing with the big kids", which is gender neutral and maintains sense of the phrase without maintaining the inherent sexism of the past usage.
"Only after we change that which seemed essential do we realize how natural the "new normal" really is and how inevitable it always was."
