Blogging 101 : How to build another kind of influence through "search"
Look at the bottom of this screen shot and tell me what you see.
I had to go into my stats to find out who was directing so much attention to my first thoughts about Google's G1. Believe it or not it's purely search traffic.
Google Search works in mysterious ways. I honestly think it's hilarious that neither Gizmodo nor Endgaget are above culturekitchen in the search for google+g1+phone. Am actually #1 in the blog search.
Yet there you have it : Am at the moment more influential about the G1 than most technology blogs "of record". Of course, that's a very emphatic "at the moment". Yet it goes to show that as a blogger, you have to not just pick wisely your battles but your weapons as well.
If you don't have the kind of money that only venture capital can give you to build the PR and marketing infrastructure that brings millions of eyeballs, what else is there on the web?
Well, there's Search.
And in this case, the timing of my post. I guess I was one of the first ones to hit "the goog".
Even if the spike in traffic just lasts a few hours, Search Engine Optimization can go a long way. If you hit that first 100 searches in place like Google, you will have ensure for ever after the "organic" kind of traffic that keeps many sites operational.
It's the kind of reminder I like to give to other bloggers when they ask me about increasing traffic organically through search.
