HEM Takes a Closer
Look:History
There
are so many ways that we learn
about history on a daily basis.
The radio, newspaper,
television, Internet, friends,
neighbors and family. Occasionally
we even pick up a history text
book, but most of the history
we enjoy and remember has come
from real life, real places
and from biographies.
My family has always loved
to hear our family’s history.
I recall that my
oldest child interviewed his
grandparents, aunts and uncles
when he was very young. I would
love to have done the same with
my relatives who are now gone.
We treasure the
records he has of how they all
met their spouses, what their
first jobs were and any other
bits of their experiences that
they shared with him.
No matter what history or
herstory that you might be researching,

Keeping Homeschooling Nonpartisan
This column discusses why we should keep homeschooling nonpartisan, talking points we can use to gain support of both Democrats and Republicans (regardless of whether we ourselves are Democrats or Republicans), and what we can do to keep homeschooling nonpartisan.

Self-Inspired Learning
Self-Inspired Learning - Karen Vogel
I’ve read all those homeschooling books detailing the adventures of families who live on the road, performing musical concerts or selling some amazing product that they invented. I’ve read about the families who decide to go back to the land and learn how to survive on their own. Those stories [...]

I’m jealous, too.**
A few weeks ago The Wall Street Journal outed a Babble post by Joanne Rendell, author of The Professors’ Wives’ Club.Â
UnschoolingÂ
Nonetheless, when I used the term “unschooling,” they needed an explanation.
“There’s no good soundbite to describe it,” I said, “just as there’s no good soundbite to describe school. But generally speaking, unschoolers don’t send their kids to regular [...]

Again, homeschooling is ‘a choice,’ not part of NCLB’s ’school choice’
SC families deserve more school choices, 8 October 2008, Hilton Head Island Packet, Hilton Head Island, South Carolina
Pessimists blame the standards, and say we cannot do better. It is time for parents, educators and lawmakers to rethink traditional public schools.
“Public education” needs to encompass a dynamic range of classrooms, suitable to the diverse learning [...]

Review, I think, of Homeschooling book
Home Blog Zone Civil Religion Homeschooling, 2008, 8 October 2008, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, St. Louis, Missouri
Score:Â -55
Credit: 5Â
The catalyst for the piece is Greg and Martine Millman’s book, Homeschooling: A Family’s Journey .
Penalties: -60
The ‘why’ of the article seems to be the poor curriculum of Catholic schools instead of the positivity of homeschooling. Other penalties were [...]
