The Best of 2006 : Jennifer Hudson's rendition of "And I Am Telling You"

I am DYING to see Dreamgirls; notwithstanding the presence of Beyonce in the movie. She and her pimping-parents have been chaffing me of late. The internets have been attwiter over how her parents have tried to sabotage Jennifer Hudson's moment in the limelight, particularly after every movie critic in this country has sang her praises and Hosannas.

Well, they're being smacked down by real talent.

In the next clip, Matt Lauer quotes Variety and I will so too :

An "American Idol" finalist without prior screen experience, Hudson comes fully-formed to film. It's the kind of galvanizing perf that calls to mind debuts like Barbra Streisand in "Funny Girl" or Bette Midler in "The Rose," with a voice like the young Aretha. More fully developed here than onstage, Effie is the fierce, wounded, pulsating heart of the movie. Her big song and second explosive number "I Am Changing" both elicit audience cheers and applause.

This is why I love being able to research this online. After hearing that Variety quote, I thought ... hmmmm ... maybe more like Shirley Bassey.

Well, off to Wikipedia and YouTube but no, Bassey is off the mark. Especially after I saw this amazing clip of Aretha singing the blues circa 1960s. They also have Better Midler in The Rose but no your Babs performing Funny Girl.

Still after watching Bassey, Aretha and Midler, you get the sense that, when you hear Hudson you are, indeed, witnessing a miracle -- the birth of a talented Hollywood star.

That's, indeed, a miracle these days.

"Jennifer Hudson" You are the STAR!!!!

I just wanted to say that I hope that Jennifer gets nominated for best actress. I like Beyonce but she was not the star of Dreamgirls. Jennifer was and girl in my book I am going to follow you from here on. I think we should all protest the best supporting actress crap, she deserves best actress. You have my vote. Keep up the good work and I look forward to seeing you in future productions.

DREAMGIRLS

After seeing the moving and Jennifer's redition of And I'm Telling You, I thought of the Broadway Show and Jennifer Halliday's redition of this song. Halliday brought down the house and it's a shame that it took 20 years to bring this show to the screen because had it been put on the big screen after it ended it's run in 1985 Halliday would have become a huge star instead of fading into the night.

Liza Should Love This

and I'm craving time to blog it so I can mock manufactured, hyped up votes of the masses, not just in tv talent shows but politics (oops, was that redundant?)

As the sixth season of American Idol -- television's most popular program -- premieres tonight at 8 on Fox, the whole concept of the show has been turned upside down.

Losing, it seems, can make you a winner. . .

The United States Military seemed more afraid of gay people than they are of terrorists ... If the terrorists ever got hold of this information, they’d get a platoon of lesbians to chase us out of Baghdad.
