Clifford Geertz, 1926-2006
Clifford Geertz, the cultural anthropologist, died on October 31 due to complications of heart surgery.
When I was an undergraduate, I read The Interpretation of Cultures, and it changed my life. It made me want to become a cultural historian, to understand symbols and the meaning of things in an entirely different way.
I'm actually too overwhelmed to write much right now. If I was more cogent, I'd write about the critiques of Geertz, and how I found many of them spot-on.
But right now, I'm kinda sad.
