Collision Course to War: Crusaders and Jihadists will get us All Killed
In 2001 I started writing a novel. It was based on a handful of facts but was supposed to be pure fiction. The premise was that the Republican Party had become the arm of fanatic Apocalyptic Christians who wanted to force Armageddeon. My jumping off point was Reagan's Interior Secretary, James Watt's statement that the second coming was at hand so we don't need an environmental policy. My premise was that the selection of George Bush as resident of the White House was intended to put a malleable figure head who could be manipulated into starting the final war over the Holy Land with America as the force of God against Islam. I had reached a point where I was considering what kind of dramatic event I could use for the climax.
The next day was 9/11/2001. I was in Manhattan on 9/11. There was no way I could continue my novel after that day.
But as the years have continued, even though I can't return to the novel (not even sure it was ever worth it!), I realize that my premise was frighteningly close to the truth. And it is increasingly clear that America IS being led by fanatics who believe we are in the midst of a Crusade against Islam.
We are on a collision course to war that will be far, far worse than the Iraq quagmire. We are going headlong into a war that will link up the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. And this collision course is being driven by BOTH sides.
The President of the United States is playing the same "smoking crater" lie with Iran that he did with Iraq. From Guysen.International.News:
George Bush is warning against a "nuclear catastrophe" if Iran persists in its nuclear aspirations. The American president said that a nuclear bomb in Iranian hands would destabilized the Middle East even more. He promised to "face the danger before it is too late".
The President of Iran is using rhetoric JUST AS DANGEROUS and JUST AS PROVOCATIVE. Again, from Guysen.International.News:
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has announced that his country aspires to take over the leadership of Iraq. "The mandate of the United States over Iraq has reached its end. It is now the turn of Iran to replace and fill the void that the (American) retreat will create".
What we have here is two fucking insane fanatics who both think God is on their side and so they can do no wrong. On the one side you have the dry drunk born again Christian extremist who feels he has a God-given right to piss on police cars and invade any nation he wants even if it requires lying about his reasons why. This is a man who believes the Apocalypse is approaching and wants every Jew in the world to move back to Israel so the second coming can occur. This man calls his war against Islam a "Crusade," at best a poor choice of terms. At worse an honest and very frightening description of how he sees the world. This Christian fanatic Crusader is leading a nation already bogged down in two wars against Islam, one fully justified against an enemy who attacked us and one comletely unjustified based on lies. This Christian fanatic leads a nation that is already sunk itself deep into debt and has overextended its military to the point where we are starting to LOSE the two wars we already are bogged down in. We are LOSING ground both in Afghanistan and in Iraq.
On the other side you have a Muslim extremist who feels he has a God-give mission to destroy Israel and the United States and has vowed to attack Israel. This is a Jihadist who COULD have been our ally against al-Qaeda, since Iran was one of the nations who hated al-Qaeda even more than we did. Yet we did all we could to alienate his nation and now he feels he has full justification to fight his own holy war against our holy war.
Iran is weaker than the US. But they are far, far stronger than Saddam Hussein's Iraq. When we invaded Iraq in 2002 it struck me that Hussein had NO AIRFORCE and NO TANK corps. The elected Bush's war to liberate Kuwait and Bill Clinton's blockade of Iraq had succeeded in reducing Hussein's military to almost nothing. And yet we are bogged down in Iraq. Perhaps Iraq didn't win but we certainly cannot claim "Mission Accomplished." Our control of Iraq barely extends outsied the Green Zone. Iran is stronger...in fact, Iran whipped Iraq's ass in their own war. We are about to take on a third nation...the strongest one yet. While we are still bogged down in the first two.
And of course the only one of them we have a legitimate grievance against is Afghanistan.
I have been saying that Bush is building to war with Iran since February when it became clear that we had already built up our forces in the Gulf to the exact level we had right before the invasion of Iraq. Since then the build up and the saber rattling have both escalated rapidly. And the Iranian President has been stoking the same fires that Bush has as if BOTH of them are eager for the coming war.
Some on Daily Kos are predicting that we have a mere four days before war becomes inevitable. I am skeptical that we will do that quite now...I think if nothing else our miliary will basically tell Bush flat out that he is insane if he wants to EXPAND the war while we are already bogged down in TWO other wars. But we can't ignore that the approach of war, driven by these two fanatics, is coinciding with the approach of the anniversary of 9/11...and Bush is going to really need to distract America from the fact that the people who attacked America are stronger than ever, free as birds.
People...this may be one of the most dangerous moments since the Cuban Missle Crisis.

Impeachment
Impeachment is DEFINITELY needed. It could be the only way to stop an invasion of Iran.
One Daily Kos diary predicts invasion by Sept. 11th.
Another Daily Kos diary predicts that September will be the big PR push for war in Iran but not the actual invasion yet.
Both are drawing on sources that have some real info on what goes on in Washington. I still think invasion won't happen yet...but the fact that we have a BIGGER buildup of military force in the Persian Gulf than we had before the invasion of Iraq, AND there was an unexpected request for $50 billion more for the war that even Gates was surprised by, it is clear Bush is preparing SOMETHING in the area.
As to my overall take on it, I used to think I was making up a good story. But the past 7 years really seem to indicate to me that our nation is increasingly run by fanatics...at least until 2006 started reversing that.

It's a Mad Mad World & I can't get off
Remember the musical comedy? On good days, I feel that what you describe if almost that laughable. On bad, I ponder whether the cognition of many can overcome the combustion of the more superstitious in this world.
Frankly--I repeat myself, I fear--I see that the cultural hand in the US is not as close to midnight as it was sometime in 05. Bush was attempting to spend his political capital and it appeared that voters might buy his promised domestic agenda. They needed some goodies for themselves. If grandma gets her free pills, why shouldn't the kids have pediatric care? That sort of thing.
Democrats did work hard to elect their candidates in 06, but I have anecdotal evidence to prove that the previous gungho born agains stayed at home in 06. It's the old, old story: don't lie, don't steal, and don't kill. That fits right in with why I think impeachment will work.
My efforts are paying off locally. Impeachment is discussed downstairs in the Towers. The local paper carried my letter which referred to it. This approach may have tones of revenge, but it stays clear from reverse fear factor.
