Holding the Iraq War Enablers Accountable Part I: Senator John Sununu (NH)

Americans United For Change brings together independent voices for new policy priorities and real leadership - to focus our elected officials on the issues that really matter to the lives of everyday Americans and get America moving in the right direction again. One of their main projects is the Iraq Accountability Project which seeks to inform voters about politicians who vote to support Bush's Iraq quagmire and the McCain/Bush/Lieberman escalation. Here is their first ad, targeting Senator John Sunnunu of New Hampshire. Let's first review Sunnunu's record on Veterans issues before we see the ad: (from Project Vote Smart)

2006 In 2006 Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America gave Senator Sununu a grade of D.

2006 Senator Sununu supported the interests of the Disabled American Veterans 40 percent in 2006.

2005 Senator Sununu supported the interests of the Disabled American Veterans 42 percent in 2005.

2004 Senator Sununu supported the interests of the Disabled American Veterans 0 percent in 2004.

2004 On the votes that the The Retired Enlisted Association considered to be the most important in 2004, Senator Sununu voted their preferred position 0 percent of the time.

So Sunnunu has not been supporting Veterans interests since 2004. And yet he wants to send MORE troops to fight in Iraq. Here's the ad:

It shames me that this man

It shames me that this man has been in office in my state for so long. 'Til recent years, though, we were a fairly red-voting state. I'm glad to say that we're turning that trend around pretty quickly!

Good luck!

New Hampshire Republicans aren't always so bad. I have some respect for moderate Republicans, even when I disagree with them. But Sunnunu stinks. Hypocritical sleaze.

Good luck in turning New Hampshire Blue! In 2006 you guys did great. I like Shea-Porter so far!

Good point - there are quite

Good point - there are quite a few moderate Republicans here that I've met that have gained my respect. But, despite the fact that most red voters here are moderates, there are also some hard-party-line Neo-Con style Republicans - my father is one of them, and since he tends to try to steamroll over and through any conversation he's involved in, I politely decline discussing politics with him. He's a minority out of those here that I've met, though.

Most of the folks around here who vote Republican tend to be more Libertarian in their value system, more 'you do your thing, I'll do mine, and let's not interfere in one another's business,' old Yankee types who tend to be fairly adamant about veteran's rights. We have a lot of vets here, and a large amount of Reservists and National Guardsmen...yet despite his voting record, Sununu keeps getting voted into office! Even my staunchly Republican father has little good to say about him, yet...*sigh* I can't say that I understand his continued popularity. I'm proud, though, of my state in 2006...Shea-Porter has impressed me so far - if her voting record continues the way it has, I'd be happy to do my part to keep her in office.

QUOTES

"What James Madison and the other men of his generation had in mind when they wrote the First Amendment was that there should be no official relationship of any character between government and any church or many churches, and no levying of taxes for the support of any church, or many churches, or all churches, or any institution conducted by any of them."

— -- Sam Ervin, address, U.S. Senate (April 23, 1973), quoted from Albert J. Menendez and Edd Doerr, The Great Quotations on Religious Freedom
