Our Troops Support Obama 6:1 Over McCain

For years US military personnel favored Republicans. I was not always clear on why, I have to admit, and my stepfather was a clear exception to this rule. He fought in WW II and Korea, retired the youngest Lt.-Col. in the history of the US Army (at least up to that point) and taught at Westpoint. And was a lifelong Democrat who in his retirement took to reading The Nation. But the fact was that most US military personnel were Republicans.

That has changed starting in 2002 and as of this year deployed US military personnel have donated to Obama 6:1 over McCain.

From the above linked Daily Kos Diary:

Here are some key talking points:

1. US military 2008 presidential campaign donations, from deployed US troops, favor Barack Obama over John McCain by a 6:1 margin.

2. The Open Secrets study was comprehensive - as ABC notes, "The center tallied money from donors who list the Air Force, Army, Marines, Navy and National Guard as an employer".

3. US military personnel have made a major shift in their donations, in favor of the Democratic Party, since 2002, when military donations favored the GOP by almost 5:1. Now, in '08, those donations favor the GOP only 3:2. That's a huge shift.

4. Anti-war presidential candidates got the lion's share of US military personnel presidential campaign donations in '08. Barack Obama is beating John McCain by 6:1`but Ron Paul, who has curtailed his campaign, nonetheless currently tops McCain by 4:1. US military personnel have expressed a clear preference through their campaign donations.

The full report can be found here.

I believe this should have been fully expected. Our soldiers have been so poorly treated, private mercenaries have been paid more and treated better than our real soliders, and Veterans benefits have been cut to the bone. It is no wonder our troops are angry as hell and are not going to take it anymore.

Supporting the troops means more than waving a flag. McCain doesn't understand that. And, in fact, his campaign responded to this report by essentially insulting the rank and file soldiers. Barack Obama trusts our troops. McCain does not.

You must be talking about

You must be talking about the Salvation Army because the majority of American troops hate Obama. He is lucky he didn't get shot by his own troops in that little photo-op he did in Iraq recently.

By the way, what is up with that ax? Are you a lumberjack or maybe an ax wielding maniac?

mole333's picture

Why do you hate our troops?

I am amazed that you would refer to our combat troops on the front lines overseas as the "Salvation Army." If you read the report you would see that it is our combat troops deployed overseas who support Obama 6:1. Why do you hate our combat troops? Why do you denegrate their service to our nation? I really find your lack of appreciation of our troops disgusting.

As to the ax, well, if you actually showed some respect for our military I might find it worthwhile to relate the story to you, but I am not interested in talking to an unpatriotic, anti-military chickenhawk like you.

I'm absolutely sure this

I'm absolutely sure this survey was not biased in any way (tongue-in-cheek). The media is owned, operated and staffed by left-wing loons that countinue to shove Obama down our throats at every turn possible. All indications that I have heard is exactly 100% contrary to what this faked up survey implies. This is just more propaganda being chucked up by some very nerves Demoncraps that see their Golden Boy slowly slipping behind as more people come to realize some cold hard truths about the media created fraud named Obama. Get a grip.

Wow...facts never get to you, do they

So, more than 50% of the mainstream media is owned by either Murdoch or Clearchannel, both decidedly and deliberately right wing biased. That alone blows away your assertion.

So what indications have you "heard?" Is that the same as the Fox News patented "some say" when they pull something out of their ass? You say that you have "heard" the contrary...come up with facts, not hearsay. Oh...yeah. You don't HAVE facts. You have the myth that is McCain, the "maverick" who supports Bush nearly 100%. He supports Bush's failed economy and failed war and Bush's attack on civil liberties.

As to our military, funny how 90% of the veterans running for office are running as Democrats these days. That goes along completely with the 6:1 donation advantage Obama has among serving military personnel. And it goes along with what I hear from actual Veterans like Jon Soltz, and Paul Rieckhoff. And what I hear from relatives of Veterans, like Diane Benson, mother of a disabled Vet and candidate for Congress in Alaska.

So, the fact that by far more veterans are running for office as Democrats than Repubs, the fact that serving military personnel are donating overwhelmingly to Obama, and the fact that every single veteran or mother of a veteran I talk to are pissed as hell at Bush and McCain contradicts what you claim to have "heard." But don't let facts affect your magical mythical maverick McCain world. You go imagine whatever you like. But don't expect the rest of us to care what you imagine in the McCain mythology.

Words to live by

The quality of being genuine is hard to convey, and deciding who should be president based solely on that basis can lead to disaster; you need brains and an ability to go with the flow as well. But voters know a phony above all and Romney came off as one from the get-go. Over the last decade he had changed his views in a rightward direction on so many issues to suit what he thought he needed to win the GOP nomination that he ended up standing for nothing but his own ambition.

[...]

It's no accident that the GOP race is down to three men who are clear about who they are: McCain, Huckabee and, yes, Ron Paul.
