Gilbert Tuhabonye Treated Mean By Frontier Airlines Denver, CO

I met Gilbert Tuhabonye, author of This Voice in My Heart, at Denver Airport.

I mean, I literally, just met him at the Denver airport on Sunday. We were sitting at tables next to each other at Seattle's Best Coffee and soon were talking.

Okay, so Gilbert went in at 3pm to check in for a 4pm flight. The guy at check-in told him, "You're not going anywhere." and wouldn't try to help him at all. That isn't that late. One hour before take off is not out of line. As you can see in the picture below, it says 45 minutes is all you need to be. (The other picture is a mural in the airport with their focus on peace and diversity.) As you can see Gilbert is a dark-skinned African man. Yes, the Frontier employee was white. So, if you overlook his rudeness to Gilbert can you also overlook that he then turned around and sold the ticket to someone else? I mean, weren't they just as late as Gilbert? (And Gilbert wasn't really "late" there was plenty of time.) So, the ticket was taken away from Gilbert and given to another person.

Two other things. Mike called security. Three security guards, no less, showed up. Well, if it wasn't for Gilbert's status as a published author who happened to have a copy of the book with him and an article from the local newspaper which showed him as in Denver to run a 10K and do a booksigning tour--basically his celebrity status--who knows if he'd have a flight at all!

The one security guard Sherry Owens, assisted Gilbert, (86021, 1331 Cherokee, DIA, Denver, CO) helped by going with Gilbert to customer sevice. It seems that Coe had left him with a no-guarantee stand-by at 8pm that night. (4 hours later.) She helped bump it to a guaranteed 8pm flight. His family would have to pick him up at Austin at like midnight...

So, we hung out a bit.

He gave me his card. (I'm sorry to say I think this man had figured out to show his card as credentials that day at the airport.) And told me of surviving genocide in Africa. I was so pleased to meet him! I mentioned I had seen Immaculee Ilibagiza on Wayne Dyer show and was blown away by her love and commitment to the goodness of the human spirit even after her neighbors had killed her whole family (and over 200.000 other Tutsis) and she spent 90-days in a small bathroom hiding with eight other women while they were being hunted by those same neighbors... When he and his friend saw my card "Listening for Change" and "ending racism" they were like, "Excellent! Yeah, yeah." and began talking. It seems when you are very dark-skin African in the US you might run into a few roadblocks at such places as airports and US borders among other places.

And our conversation quickly went to how each of us had chosen to stay in joy and in the case of Gilbert and I--believe humans are actually born good and loving and such but society messes us up whereas his friend, Tom (also African heritage and wishes to not be named) is firm that we are born in sin but by God's grace we can be godly and good.

Either way, we all think that being in joy--that is even though things are f'd up we decide to stay as much in an inner joy as possible--is the way to go. I mean, I think we're saying it's the most effective way to have a decent life in the midst of oppression while also influencing our fellows and appealing to the human in them.

Well, after a while Tom had to go and Gilbert and I went up to the Frontier place again. We hoped to find Coe but he was no longer on duty. Maybe having a white American woman with him would change things. As we're standing in line to check his bags a guy--white--walks up to us and says very very politely, "Do you mind if I go in front of you, my flight leaves in 30 minutes?" Me and Gil exchange looks. "Sure!" We were already in documentation mode for complaint letters. His picture is posted talking to Dixie of Frontier.

Sure enough, he was rushed through! No questions asked. Somehow there was no treatment as though he might be a cell, terrorist, or a "n----" (Gilbert's words for how he was being treated) and it's easy to see he didn't provoke anything. Gilbert relayed events as having to wait and wait while Michael Coe deleted his reservation and sold it to someone else then he ignored him and vindictively said,"Next, next customer!!" and dismissed him. When Gilbert asked again why he could not check his bags, Coe called security.

When we got up to the Frontier desk, Dixie was very friendly to Gilbert and told us Gilbert now had lots of friends in the airport. She also confirmed the employees name as Michael Coe.

That's where we parted ways.

My suggestion is there be a policy and a humanistic training which addresses racial biases among staff. And that Michael Coe be fired. I also think Gilbert should receive a complimentary flight on their airlines the next time he needs to go somewhere.

Racially profiled by Frontier Airlines Denver,CO on 6/18/06

I am a frequent flyer, but patronized by Frontier
Airlines on 6/16 for the very first time by any airline. I wish I was writing to
disclose excellent customer service, but it is to the contrary.

I was traveling with a colleague to Denver for the weekend utilizing a Buddy Pass. Traveling to Denver from San Jose was a pleasant experience. However, the return trip was a degrading, disgusting, and embarrassing experience. As a
frequent flyer, I have always experienced good customer service on the
airlines, and I expected the same from Frontier, especially after reviewing
your customer service statement which states "Frontier is committed
to providing each and every passenger with the best possible travel experience
both in the air and on the ground". To be more specific, below
is a synopsis of what happened:

On 6/16/06 a colleague and I traveled from
San Jose, CA to Denver, CO on a Buddy Pass, Frontier Flight 166. Our
attire was gaucho pants, t-shirts and flip flop sandals. The staff
was very pleasant and helpful, and we were not harassed about our attire
or disrespected because of our attire.

On our return flight on 6/18/2006, Flight 163, our attire was jeans, white t-shirts, and flip and flop sandals. However, this time, one of your employees refused to
give me a ticket wearing the very same shoes I received my ticket to Denver in. The agent at the desk advised my colleague and me to change into some more "business appropriate shoes". She proceeded to tell us that we were non-revenue generating customers saying we purchased our tickets for little to nothing. My colleague, Shavia Jones, changed into tennis shoes, and I had to borrow a pair of my colleague's shoes which were too small in order to proceed with our travel plans. When I received my ticket it had in big letters "Check dress code at desk"
written over it with a yellow marker. Once I received the ticket from the agent,
I put my flip flops back on to walk to Gate 24. As I approached the second ticket agent, and before I could change back into the shoes, which were too small, the agent said rudely to me "You can not get on the plane with those shoes, so don't try and change your shoes and get away with it, they've already called down here". At this point, I am wondering how the agent knew who I was, considering I had not even approached the desk, given her my ticket, ID, or anything else that would associate me with my encounter with the first agent. The only thing
I can assume was that the first agent described our ethnicity, and her
assumption that we were young children or teenagers. What your agents
did was racially profile me and my colleague, and it was very humiliating
and unprofessional. I was appalled at your agents' unprofessional behavior, and regret being treated like a child, and I wondered to myself, if your employees had known that I was a young professional engineer at IBM, would I have been treated with this same level of disrespect.
Karla Davinson, however, when we asked for her name, she laughed and said
"ha...what, a standby passenger wants my name because they didn't have
on the right shoes?" She then proceeds to scribe her name very sloppy on my ticket, and as we walked away she said “you must not ever want to fly with us again.” At this point we are livid, and even more embarrassed. We just wanted to get home, and away from the rudeness we had experienced in Denver. We proceeded to our seats to get comfortable for take-off, when another agent approached us on the plane when it was quiet and he stated "I'm going to let you fly this time, but you will never fly Frontier again. You need to learn respect
and not be so disrespectful." I start to ask him what the problem was since we never disrespected anyone, and he interrupted me asking "do you want to talk about this off the plane?" I felt harassed, and provoked at this point, so I told him no. He finished his harassment by saying "we need to learn to be more respectful and the person who gave you the buddy passes will be getting their flying privileges revoked, but I’m sure you don’t care. I have business casual attire, and don't have a problem wearing it, especially if there is a specific dress code, but what I do have a problem with is being treated with disrespect, being
racially profiled, harassed, and provoked while patronizing a particular
company. When we arrived in San Jose, we asked about the policy and was given the printed rules from an agent. That same agent explained that the dress code is enforced at the agents' discretion, and I believe this to be true since we departed from San Jose with no problem. The dress code was not defined on our Buddy Pass, and your employees in Denver did not take the time to educate us about the dress code. Instead, their tactics were racially profiling, harassment, embarrassment, provoking, and degrading.

My future travel plans will not include Frointer Airlines because of the horrible
customer service.

I am white and was wearing a double breasted suit in an airport I was seen at regularly. At a time when restrictions did not require the same checking procedures, but simlilar weapons declaration procedures as now. TIA the Airport, American Airlines the carrier an obviuos and proudly flaming conscierge for the check in counter refused helping me. I missed my flight my meeting and my promotion. With an anti-geneticly white/goya cheating firm in Westlake Village,CA called MSIS. All because I was eminating Heterosexualness, before someone having a bad homo day. There are no heterosexual discrimination lawyers. My message to you is airlines suck buddy, largely because they think they can treat everyone like poop and we dont have choices. Every hetero should forget them and take the bus, the train. Let airlines fail they deserve it. Dont think they treated you like crap because you where black or homely. They just suck. I do suspect someone else of using you to write a book and have you front for it you should bitch about that.

Good to see you in these parts today, are you ready for PIRATES Friday?? Liza and I can't wait - not to hijack the thread but I thought of it because Johnny Depp so deliciously enjoys his lugubrious swishiness in his Jack Sparrow characterization. It wasn't even in the script, he created it thinking it was rebellion -- but the honchos went wild for it, and so did WE!

Now that he's a dad and his irrational anger at the world has eased into domestic playfulness, and that's whence it sprang, or so I read in Newsweek a couple of weeks back. Sorry, no link. But the world would be poor indeed if all we had was one skin to be stuck in snarling for our whole lives!
