Video of Zidane's explanation : Lots of apologies with no regrets

BBC Radio 5 consulted a lip reading expert. The expert claims she could decipher Materazzi telling Zidane he was the son of a terrorist whore.

It came down to this : The best soccer player in the world looses his head over not just any ethnic slur, but one of the most hideously political ethnic slurs anybody could use against a man of Middle Eastern ascendancy : son of a terrorist whore.

During his Canal+ interview Zidane did not repeat the words uttered by the italian player. He did apologize, epecially to the children, for his unforgivable reaction. Yet he did not express any regret : To do so would be to say he had every reason to say what he said.

Do you think that I would do something like that, during the last 10 minutes of my career ... that I would do something like that just because I felt like it? ... What I did was inexcusable ... but the one who provokes ought to be taken to task.

You can watch the Canal+ interview here and continue on to YouTube.com for part two.

"We've all seen by now thousand times the pics of Zisou's headbutting incident with Materazzi. But there are these two pictures that unfortunately many have not seen because it gives a different perspective to the already sensationalized incident. The first one is the attack from Materazzi against Zisou. This is what started the whole incident and not the fact that Materazzi pulled or tug Zisou's jersey. On the second pic you see Buffon, the italian goalkeeper, embracing Zisou in a supportive gesture. This action from Buffon is proof that Zisou, even thou wrong for his reaction, was also wronged. Materazzi should have also been given red because of his flagrant foul against Zidane. But instead Zidane was the one who had to see red, and an end to the opportunity of becoming a second star on his national jersey."

By the way, today was reported in the german national newspaper "Das Bild" as Materazzi admitting that he indeed insulted Zidane's sister and not his mother as it is being reported. Sometimes there may be a little bit of tension or bad blood between Liza and I, to the point that at one time or the other either one of us got body slammed by the other. That's normal behavior amongst siblings. But if that would have been me in Zisou's shoes, I would have done the same or even worst. Negra, maybe there are times that I can rip your head off, but I love you so much that I will bust someone's knee cap and kick 'em in the ding-ding for you, you old fart Eye-wink!

hmmm. i received this email from NARAL today. i'm not sure i like it much. there's just enough ignorance in it to piss me off. i mean, what century are we in that "latinos" and black women are the *only* women of color? what happened to asian, arabs and native women? and the three "pillars" that are being organized around, community control, holistic health, and positive motherhood, sound like they have been re-written by some over anxious white dude who doesn't want to piss off the white women who support NARAL (established women of color org's *do* organize around these things, it just sounds like the fierce women of color language has been co-opted). and the email title is as follows: " It's time to Recognize! the reproductive health needs of women of color". ummm, is it really time? forty years after women of color started organizing on their own because white women couldn't bear to make us a part of the movement, it is *finally* time?
grrr.
