Civil Liberties in NYC: Norm Siegel for Public Advocate

Norm Siegel, candidate for Public Advocate, has a new website and a new Youtube video:

For those who aren't familiar with Norman Siegel, he has been defending the Civil Liberties of Americans decades. From his website:

Norman Siegel, raised in Brooklyn, has been an advocate for New Yorkers throughout his 40 year career. He has been a leader in the fight for freedom, justice, and equality for all, issues that have pulled at our city’s fabric for too many generations.

Norman Siegel began his career as a civil rights/civil liberties lawyer when, following his graduation from Brooklyn College and New York University Law School, he joined the American Civil Liberties Union's Southern Justice & Voter Law Project in 1968. There, he was co-counsel in numerous lawsuits challenging the systemic exclusion of blacks and women from juries in various counties in South Carolina, Florida, Virginia and Alabama. Two voting rights cases in which he was involved are :

Hadnott v. Amos (U.S. Supreme Court case allowing 89 mainly black candidates to run for political office in Alabama), and

Gloria Steinem, Frank Barbaro and Steve Harrison in NYC

27 Feb 2008 - 6:30pm
27 Feb 2008 - 8:30pm

Fundraiser for Steve Harrison for Congress (NY-13)
Wed., Feb. 27, 2008, 6:30 PM
Hosted by Lewis Cohen. Honorary host Gloria Steinem. Special Guest Frank Barbaro.
Social Bar and Grill, 795 8th Avenue, New York, NY 10019

Fundraiser Suggested Donations $100-$2300

Steve Harrison is running against Bush Republican Vito Fossella in the NY-13 race. Steve is a friend of mine and I can personally vouch for his dedication and drive.

Steve Harrison passionately stands for good, old-fashioned, Democratic values that resonate with most voters. And he seeks to retake the dialogue from the radical right wing. Steve advocates that we stop running from being Democrats and being Liberals. He seems to favor the term "liberal" to "progressive," and for solid reasons. Liberal is what this nation was founded on, the liberal values of liberty (same root), equality, fairness and rights. Our founding fathers were so passionate about Liberal values that they demanded Liberty or Death...they were willing to die for liberty. George Bush and Vito Fossella ask us to surrender our liberties out of fear of our enemies. Our founding fathers, Liberals that they were, would reject that as cowardly and fundamentally un-American. Liberty is patriotic and this is why Democrats are more patriotic than Republicans today. Steve Harrison believes that surrendering the Constitution out of fear of terrorists is un-Patriotic and un-American because the Constitution is the very foundation of our liberties, of our nation. The Constitution is the codification of the liberties and Liberal values that our founding fathers were willing to die for. We should be proud to call ourselves Liberal because THAT is what America is all about: liberties, equality, fairness. And those are Liberal Democratic values.

NASA/GISS @ NYAS: NYC Urban Heat Island, Climate Change, Asthma Incidence

Cynthia Rosenzweig, PhD, is a senior research scientist at NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies, and leader of its Climate Impacts Group. She will discuss New York City as an urban heat island, climate change, and asthma incidence. Cynthia works not only on investigating impacts, but on testing mitigation strategies, i.e. greening roofs, etc.

Speaker is cool, she's as giggly a climate rock star as you'll ever find (see her bio blurb on the NYAS site & look up her pubs on http://www.giss.nasa.gov using her last name).

These things often fill up to capacity with smarties & whackos alike (not that it's so easy to tell us apart), so RSVP ASAP, by clicking here.

The New York Academy of the Sciences has moved; it's now adjacent the WTC site. $10 for students. Dinner (optional) at 5:30, by reser, open bar during, & fancy but $35. Meeting begins at 7PM.
